Animal Crossing: New Horizons Coming to Switch 2 with Major Upgrades

Published on

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is getting a next-gen upgrade. Nintendo has announced that Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition will launch on January 15, bringing a wave of new features — plus a free update for all players on both the original Switch and Switch 2.

A Fresh Look for a New Console

The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of Animal Crossing: New Horizons adds several technical and gameplay improvements, including:

  • 4K resolution in TV mode for sharper visuals
  • Mouse controls using the right Joy-Con 2 for decorating, writing, and custom designs
  • In-game megaphone support via the Switch 2’s built-in microphone
  • Online multiplayer for up to 12 players
  • CameraPlay, letting players connect a USB camera and see friends’ reactions in-game

Players who already own Animal Crossing: New Horizons on Nintendo Switch can grab a paid upgrade pack, available for pre-order now on the Nintendo eShop. New players can buy the full game digitally or physically when it launches.

Free Update Adds a Resort, Resetti’s Return, and More

Launching the same day, the free content update adds a new layer of island life for both Switch and Switch 2 players.

Highlights include:

  • Kapp’n’s Resort Hotel – A seaside getaway managed by Kapp’n’s family. Players can decorate guest rooms, design displays in the souvenir shop, and even dress mannequins in themed outfits.
  • Resetti’s Reset Service – Mr. Resetti returns with a helpful way to “reset” your island setup without starting from scratch.
  • Expanded storage – Homes can now store up to 9,000 items, including trees and flowers.
  • Slumber Islands – Nintendo Switch Online members can design and save up to three dream islands, collaborate with friends in real time, and invite residents from their main island.

Crossovers, Collectibles, and amiibo Surprises

Nintendo is leaning into fan service with this update. Players can collect and display classic Nintendo items such as the Ultra Hand and retro consoles, and even play select NES and SNES games in-game when interacting with console items.

A special LEGO® collaboration is also debuting, bringing brick-style furniture and decorations to your island. Plus, The Legend of Zelda and Splatoon amiibo can unlock exclusive items and visiting characters.

The Island Life Continues

For many, Animal Crossing: New Horizons defined a generation of cozy gaming. With its upgraded visuals, new ways to connect, and fresh content, the Switch 2 Edition feels like both a nostalgic return and a bold new chapter.

Both the Switch and Switch 2 versions will receive the update on January 15, marking one of the biggest expansions the series has seen since launch.
