Weibo Gaming advance to the LoL Worlds grand final

Published on

Weibo Gaming, in spite of the doubters, will be one of the two teams in the grand finals of the League of Legends World Championship 2023.

It was set up for Bilibili Gaming to make it to the grand finals. Firstly, they had the momentum from taking down Gen.G in their quarterfinal upset. Secondly, it was Bilibili the 2nd seed LPL team taking on Weibo the 6th seed. Lastly, Bilibili won all three of their last encounters; 2-1 in Spring Groups, 3-0 in Spring Playoffs, and 2-1 in Summer Groups.

That is not to say Weibo Gaming is a weak team. Their Korean ace, Kang “TheShy” Seung-lok, won the World Championship in 2018 on Invictus Gaming. While Liu “Crisp” Qingsong, their support, won it the year after in 2019 on FunPlus Phoenix. This is a World Championship caliber team and it was their time to show it.

To add to the pressure, it was TheShy’s birthday coming in to the game. He also had home-country pressure, as well as knowing that he hadn’t reached the grand finals of a World Championship since 2018. But the pressure didn’t stop him and actually forged a diamond as he was awarded the MVP for the series.

It was back and forth the entire series, both teams wanting to make it to the big stage and raise the trophy. The fans got their money worth for sure as we saw all five games. Ultimately, it came down to a swing on the final game, which was also incredibly tight, that gave Weibo the win and sent Bilibili home.

Upcoming Games

Weibo Gaming will face off against the winner of the highly anticipated T1 vs. JDG match. That other semifinal will be live on on Twitch (embedded below). Will T1 pull on the hometown advantage to advance? or will JDG get one step closer to completing the Golden Road?
